Spatial Planning & Urban Studies will focus mainly on the built environment of the city of Krakow – however, not only as a place whose historic part has been inscribed on the UNESCO heritage list, but also as a space for interesting processes and transformations taking place outside the city center. The aim of this BESE module is to bring together selected interdisciplinary and topical elements of spatial management, urban planning, dealing with the cultural & natural heritage, urban design and the theme of perceiving public space in the context of the resources and assets of Krakow and Małopolska (the Lesser Poland Voivodeship).

As part of this summer school, our tutors have prepared a set of online & stationary classes – lectures and labs on the topics such as: urban functional areas, spatial data in planning process, urban revitalization also of the post-industrial areas, online ArcGIS and its usefulness in urban analysis and social participation processes, Krakow’s public spaces, and issues of sustainable city. The whole will be complemented by workshops, city walks and field classes on experiencing public space through photography.

In addition to its merits, we also hope that our summer school will become a platform for valuable encounters and an opportunity to spend quality time together.
